Fire blazes west of Williams Lake

A fire in Bull Canyon, about 85 kilometres west of Williams Lake, was fanned by winds Wednesday, causing it to reach 50 hectares.

A fire in Bull Canyon, about 85 kilometres west of Williams Lake, was fanned by winds Wednesday, causing it to reach 50 hectares.

With winds gusting up to 25 km/h funneled through the canyon, pushing the fire in Bull Canyon along the north side of the Chilko River.

Airtankers and the B.C. Forest Service personnel worked until dark Wednesday night, creating lines of fire retardant around the blaze.

About 30 firefighters were onsite Thursday, with 40 more en route. Heavy machinery will be used to establish fire guards around the fire's flanks.

The fire is not currently threatening any structures or the nearby community of Alexis Creek.

The fire was person-caused, though the specific cause is under investigation. The public is urged to use extra caution around all sources of flame or heat.
