Guests staying at the Connaught Motor Inn last night were woken up to lights and sirens when a fire broke out in one of the vacant suites on the second floor.

The fire started at 4:20 a.m. Sunday morning, and the fire department pulled up within three or four minutes, according to Allan Walker, head of maintenance for the hotel.

The front windows of the suite were blown out when firefighters turned their hoses onto the flames.

There was one family staying below and a few guests staying near the suite, but there were no injuries.

"With the assistance of RCMP, surrounding units were checked for tenants and [were evacuated]. Crews made entry to the fully involved unit and knocked the fire down, crews continued to check the unit and surrounding units for fire extension and commenced overhaul of the fire," said Prince George Fire Rescue Service, in a press release.

The suites are bunker-style which prevented the fire from spreading from room to room.

"Thank god for fire walls. It's cinder blocks on top of a concrete slab ... [the walls] did their job, that's for sure," said Walker.

"After they put the fire out, you could barely smell smoke," said Walker.

According to Prince George Fire and Rescue, it's estimated there is $25,000 in damages but Walker thinks that the damage is minimal.

"$25,000 would be a high figure," said Walker.

"It's hard to say what the hell caused it, but they'll be investigating it tomorrow," said Walker.

The scene has been secured by Fire Rescue and is set to be investigated Monday.
