Prince George and area residents are encouraged to sign up early for this year's Relay for Life event.

Eryn Reynolds, organizer of the local event, which is part of the Canadian Cancer Society's largest national fundraiser, said those registering by the Jan. 31 deadline will receive a $5 discount off the regular registration fee of $15.

She said Relay for Life participants will come together in Prince George at Massey Place to celebrate survivors of cancer, remember those who lost the battle, and fight back against all cancers as they lap the track for "24 unforgettable hours of fun, friendship and fundraising."

Last year in Prince George there were 1,520 participants who raised about $430,000, and Reynolds hopes to exceed both those numbers during the May 14 and 15 event.

Across B.C. and Yukon, 2010 statistics show 15,500 participants raised more than $5.4 million to fight cancer through research, awareness and support programs.

Survivors attending 51 events numbered 2,600 and about 15,300 candles were lit in the memory of loved ones. A total of 6,900 volunteers played a role in making the events a success.
