Volunteer firefighters were called to battle a blazing locomotive in Red Rock Monday night.

Red Rock-Stoner Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nelson Malcolm said the department was called at 10:30 p.m. to assist CN Rail with a locomotive burning out of control.

"We got the call saying the engine was on fire and they couldn't get it out. When we got there, yeah, it was on fire. It was at least 50 per cent involved," Malcolm said.

A second locomotive pulled the burning engine south to the rail crossing at Merton Road where firefighters could access it, he said.

"They said they had dropped all the cars they'd been pulling two kilometers back," Malcolm said.

Approximately 20 firefighters from Red Rock-Stoner, the Buckhorn Volunteer Fire Department and Pineview were on the scene for nearly three hours extinguishing the fire. Once the fire was out, CN crews were able to tow the scorched locomotive away.

Malcolm couldn't comment on the cause of the fire.

A spokesperson for CN Rail could not comment on the fire as of press time.
