The worker who died early Thursday morning at Canfor's Plateau Mills near Vanderhoof was employed by the BID Group of Companies, doing contract work at the mill.
Brian Fehr, the company's CEO, expressed the company's condolences and pledged to get to the bottom of what happened.
"It is with profound sadness that we report fatal injuries to one of our maintenance workers," said Fehr. "The incident occurred during last night's night shift at Plateau Sawmill...The employee worked for the Nechako Construction division of BID. The incident occurred sometime after 3:30 a.m. during work on the tilt hoist line."
The name of the victim could not be disclosed as the immediate loved ones had not yet been fully contacted.
"The BID Group and mill owner Canfor have a long and close working history," said Fehr. "On behalf of the BID Group family, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the worker. The safety of all employees is and continues to be a top priority for me and our management. I will make a point of coming around to all crews in next week to go over the details to ensure nothing like this happens again."
WorkSafeBC and the BC Coroners' Service, along with RCMP, have all started co-operative investigations.
