A $150,500 federal grant announced last week will open doors for people with physical and mental disabilities to enjoy visiting northern B.C., according to the Northern B.C. Tourism Association.

The funding, provided through the Tourism Relief Fund, will help attract visitors to the region by facilitating improvements to tourism experiences in northern B.C that will improve accessibility for people with mobility, sensory and mental disabilities.

“Working to support the development of accessible and inclusive tourism experiences is an important part of developing a desirable destination and we are thrilled with this opportunity to assist northern B.C. tourism businesses in their accessibility efforts” association CEO Clint Fraser said in a statement issued on Monday. “This funding will not only be applied to projects that enhance the visitor experience but also improve the quality of life for residents in northern B.C.”

The program will provide tourism-based businesses with resources to assess and prioritize options to improve accessibility and help with itinerary development.

International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan announced the funding on Thursday at the Exploration Place. Sajjan is also the minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan).
