One suspect could be heard talking to the other.
"It's a bait truck," he said.
Yes, it certainly was. The two men inside the police-rigged pickup thought they were going for a joyride but Mounties surrounded it and powered down the engine by remote control, leaving the father and son inside to scramble for the woods. They were not on the run for long.
Devin Andrew Jacobs, 26 and Dennis Alexander Jacobs, 50, now face the charges stemming from the 10-minute drive, all of it seen on video, heard on microphone, and under the watchful eye of Prince George police.
"Those two certainly have criminal records and are both well known to police officers in Prince George," said Prince George RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass. "Yes, they have been caught together before and now they face these allegations together."
The incident happened on April 8 when the bait truck was activated. Police are sent an electronic signal when any of the city's bait vehicles are entered.
Mounties got themselves into position and stopped the truck when safe to do so. The two suspects jumped from the truck and ran into a wooded area in the vicinity of Wilson Park at the north end of Ospika Boulevard.
"They planned their escape on the video," said Douglass. "Once they do abandon the vehicle, police dog Azar tracked the driver approximately a kilometre and a half to the area of First Avenue and Ospika, and he was found hiding underneath a vehicle."
He did not come out when ordered to do so by police. Azar assisted in bringing him into the open and he was treated at hospital for a dog bite before being transported to police cells. The second suspect evaded police for several days but was eventually located and arrested.
