The Brucejack gold mine in northwestern B.C. has been shut down, following a fatality there.

The mine's new owners, Newcrest Mining Ltd., confirmed on Thursday that a worker with its mining contractor, Procon, was killed at the underground mine on October 22.

"The Brucejack mine rescue team is in the process of determining safe entry into the incident location," Newcrest said in a news release.

"An investigation into the isolated incident is currently underway and Newcrest is working closely with Procon and the relevant authorities. There is no ongoing threat to the safety or physical well-being of the Brucejack team.

"All mining and processing operations at Brucejack have been suspended until further notice."

The Brucejack mine was developed by Pretium Resources, which was acquired by Newcrest earlier this year for $3.5 billion.
