Avalanche Canada is reporting a fatal avalanche in the Hasler riding area, east of Mackenzie, on the weekend.

The organization says it has preliminary information that indicates a party of four snowmobilers were in the area on Saturday (Nov. 27) when one person triggered and was caught in an avalanche and did not survive.

It’s now asking backcountry users in the North Rockies to avoid all avalanche terrain and stay clear of overhead hazards.

Avalanche Canada says a steady storm pattern has given the snowpack little time to stabilize between snowfalls and forecast weather will push the region’s snowpack into yet another natural avalanche cycle over the coming days.

Forecast snowfall should bring 30-60 cm of new snow to the region by end of day Tuesday (Nov. 30).

Strong to extreme wind will accompany the snowfall and contribute to increasingly touchy slabs forming in most areas.
