At its new location for the second week in a row, the Prince George Farmers' Market officially opened its doors Saturday at 1310 Third Avenue.
"We've got Quebec Street closed from Second to Third Avenue and the outside vendors are there and this is the kick off," Philip Myatovic, president of the Prince George Farmers' Market, said. "The location is excellent and the weather cooperated today. The inside facility is more spacious than the previous location and the joke is if you're claustrophobic, you can come and visit us here, you'll like the new space."
The City of Prince George wanted to develop the property across from where the Prince George Farmers' Market was previously located at 1074 Sixth Avenue and Myatovic said after looking at about 10 different locations, they decided the Third Avenue location was ideal. The space is considered an interim location, which will be occupied by the Prince George and District Community Arts Council in the next year or two. There is a vacant lot right next door that would offer an option to build a new facility.
For years there have been two farmers' markets in Prince George, including the Prince George Farmers' Market and the Wilson Square Farmers' Market currently located at the Pine Centre Mall parking lot, which also had their official opening Saturday.
The two farmers' markets have not come together at one location and as the Wilson Square Market has signed on the dotted line for their location at Pine Centre, they won't be moving any time soon, according to president Lawrence Hewitt.
Myotovic would like to see the two amalgamate, he said.
"I hope that we would come together to make a bigger splash," Myotovic said. "Anybody that makes, bakes or grows can come down here and join us."
