A man and two young children from Alberta were killed Wednesday afternoon when their minivan struck an oncoming tractor trailer on Highway 16 east of Tete Jaune Junction.

A woman and another young child in the minivan were seriously injured and have since been transported to hospital in Edmonton where they are in stable condition.

Witnesses told police the minivan was heading east when the driver attempted to pass a vehicle near the Moose Lake overpass, about 39 kilometres east of the junction. But the minivan went out of control and swerved into the oncoming lane and was T-boned by a westbound semi truck pulling a trailer.

The semi's driver was not injured in the collision.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 3:45 p.m. and the stretch was closed for most of the night as investigators gathered evidence.

The two children who died were three and six years old and the one who survived is three years old. Names of the victims and the ages of the adults have not been released.
