The Prince George SPCA will be offering a big break on the cost of adopting a cat or kitten from the shelter for the next two weeks.
Starting Tuesday and continuing through to Dec. 8, kittens will be available for $62.50 and cats for $47.50 - half the usual price the shelter charges to cover the cost of spaying or neutering and immunization.
And the shelter at 4011 Lansdowne Road has plenty of felines available.
"We have 12 in the shelter right now and then we have a whole bunch more out in foster care," assistant manager Sarah Thompson said.
Called the "Fall for Kittens" campaign, it follows on the three-day "Pick Your Purr-fect Pet" promotion held in August. That was limited to adult cats - defined as those older than six months - with adopters giving a donation in exchange. Four cats found homes as a result.
"In a week on average we adopt out 10 animals so to adopt out four cats in three days is awesome," Thompson said.
On average, a cat will stay in an SPCA shelter for 56 days, running up a bill of $784 in the process. Across the province, there are 936 adult cats and 1,146 kittens in SPCA shelters.
Those interested in adopting go through a matching process.
"You may walk in and fall in love with this adorable cat but what if you want a cat that's super playful and all that cat does is sleep?," Thompson said. "We try and make sure we match the adopter with the right cat because we want the adopter to take the cat home and it to be a forever home."
As an added bonus, all cats and kittens are also covered by six weeks pet insurance courtesy of Petsecure.
The shelter is open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.
