Fake traffic tickets are showing up in local e-mail inboxes, Prince George RCMP is warning.

Similar to past scams, notably when a fraud artist poses as a tax collector, the recipient is ordered to pay up, and sometimes through unconventional means like iTunes cards, Cpl. Craig Douglass said Thursday.

The best thing to do is to ignore and delete, like thousands of others have since the scam began to emerge in other communities across the country.

Legitimate tickets are either handed directly to the driver by the police officer or sent through regular mail. Likewise, parking tickets from the city are left on the windshield and tickets for running a red light at an intersection monitored by an ICBC camera will come in the mail.

"If you receive one of these, ask yourself how police would even have your e-mail address," Douglass said.
