An RCMP bomb squad was brought in from the Lower Mainland on Wednesday to deal with a suspicious device found in the South Fort George neighbourhood.

Police received a call just after 8 a.m. from a work crew who came across what appeared to be a bomb in an alley off 20th Avenue between Gorse and Hemlock, Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said.

Officers who attended the scene determined that the item had been there for an extended period of time, but did look suspicious and called in the RCMP's explosives disposal unit, who were on the location just after noon.

"After further examination, it was determined that the device was not capable of an explosion, but was made to look like it was," Douglass said. "Some area residents were evacuated for a short period of time during this incident."

The investigation into the matter is concluded, Douglass said.
