The new traffic signal along Victoria Street is expected to be up and running by the beginning of the school year.
The intersection at Ninth Avenue is a joint project between the city and the province, with a contractor from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure doing the work.
According to city engineering supervisor Heather Andreychuck, the new signal replacing the existing pedestrian crosswalk, was identified as part of the traffic impact study completed for the now-stalled Delta hotel development adjacent to the Prince George Public Library.
"The development was required to undertake a traffic impact study as part of the development permit application process," Andreychuk said.
The study reviewed existing traffic volumes, projected traffic from the hotel and community growth. A full signal was indicated as warranted for the Ninth Avenue/Victoria Street intersection.
The project that was set out in this year's capital plan, with a $100,000 budget funded from reserves and development cost charges.
