Seizure of some explosives from a vehicle police pulled over in October has led to a three-month jail term for a Prince George man.
Jesse Colin Vandergoes, 33, was issued the sentence in Prince George provincial court this week for two counts of making or possessing explosives and one count each of break and enter to commit an indictable offence and possession of a firearm contrary to an order.
Vandergoes and one other person, Brent Allan Fulljames, 24, were arrested on the evening of Oct. 17 after Prince George RCMP pulled over a vehicle on Osipka Boulevard for a traffic violation.
Goods possibly related to a break and enter earlier in the evening caught members' eyes and a subsequent search uncovered four pipe bombs, three of which appeared to have a "substance" in them, police said at the time.
The items were taken out to a gravel pit and destroyed.
One other count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose were stayed, as were three counts of possession of a firearm contrary to an order and one count of possession of stolen property under $5,000.
Fulljames faces charges of break and enter to commit an indictable offence and possession of stolen property on the incident and his case is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on Feb. 11.
Vandergoes has an extensive criminal record with most of the offences committed in Nanaimo.
In Dec., he was sentenced to one year in jail in Prince George for trafficking in a controlled substance.
And in Jan. 2008, he was sentenced to a year in jail for production of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, committed in Dawson Creek.
Those convictions stem from a Sept. 2006 incident in which a fire gutted a townhouse where Vandergoes was living.
In addition to almost five kilograms of marijuana, investigators found more than 50 butane containers in the basement and Vandergoes admitted to having used the butane for making weed oil or hash oil. Vandergoes was taken to hospital in Dawson Creek but two men downstairs suffered serious burns and were taken by air ambulance to hospital in Edmonton where one later died.
Crown decided not to proceed with criminal negligence charges in the death of the one man and serious injuries to the other because it was unclear who was involved at the time the fire started.
Investigators found almost five kilograms of marijuana, including marijuana shake and marijuana bud, in the home, as well as some marijuana plants.
Vandergoes was sentenced Wednesday in Prince George provincial court.
