Explosive device reason to close University Way

University Way has been reopened since 11:10 a.m. Wednesday after the B.C. RCMP's Explosive Disposal Unit from Vancouver successfully destroyed an improvised explosive device found near a garbage can and light standard on University Way late last night.

The area was searched by a police service dog and the forensic identification section was called to gather evidence.

"Our response was necessary in this situation," said Inspector Brad Anderson, operations officer for the Prince George detachment. "Our first priority will always be the safety of our officers and the general public."

The initial report was the sound of a big bang indicating an explosion at about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday night and upon investigation a device was discovered along the roadway.

Near the time of the incident, a person on a bike was seen in the area of the improvised explosive device. Police are looking to identify this person.

The investigation into this incident is continuing. The Prince George RCMP have allocated a number of resources towards this investigation and will continue to do so.
