An explosion at a mill outside of Burns Lake may have left several people seriously injured.

On Friday night, there were unconfirmed reports of an explosion at Babine Forest Products mill around 8 p.m.

Burns Lake RCMP responded to an explosion at the Babine Forest Products mill.

North District RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lesley Smith confirmed that Burns Lake RCMP responded to an explosion at the site.

"Emergency services, fire, ambulance are also on route and the fire departments from Houston and Smithers are also en route. It is unknown at this time how many are injured or how many involved and members from other detachments will also be assisting," Smith said. "This information can change at any time due to the fact it is an unfolding event."

Prince George resident Trevor Louie said he had family members who worked at the mill, but he heard from friends in the Burns Lake area that they were safe.

"It sounds like their roof's collapsed and everything in one of the parts of the mill," Louie said.

Burns Lake media reported that mill employees noticed a strong smell of gas prior to the explosion.

"All of a sudden there was a big explosion. It was so loud. About half the crew has been seriously injured," an employee told the Lakes District News.

More information about the incident will be forthcoming this morning, Smith said.
