The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George warning residents to expect longer wait times at the Foothills landfill and transfer stations this weekend, and asking people to avoid unnecessary trips.

Landfill staff will be enforcing social distancing measures at the landfill and transfer stations, meaning fewer people can be on-site at any given time, district manager of waste diversion programs Laura Zapotichny said in a press release.

"We recognize this will mean long wait times, but we are asking the public for its patience and cooperation. When it comes to measures to keep everyone safe from COVID-19, we must be all in this together,” Zapotichny said. "This is the time of year when we see a lot of people coming to our landfills and transfer stations loaded up with waste from their spring cleaning projects."

The district has suspended sales of Norgrow compost to further limit traffic to the landfill.

Most district facilities will be closed on Good Friday. The landfill is otherwise operating at its regular hours, while the Quinn Street Recycling Depot and Vanway transfer station are maintaining their winter hours until the end of the month.

The winter hours for the district's solid waste facilities can be found online here https://rdffg.bc.ca/services/environment/solid-waste-management/transfer-station-winter-hours.

“We know it will be a very busy weekend for us, with long waiting lines at many of our facilities,” Zapotichny adds. “But we are hopeful with the public’s cooperation we will manage through these challenging times.”
