Professors and students were back in the classroom at UNBC today (Dec. 2), and they’ll remain there to finish fall classes.

The university’s Senate has removed the exam period for the current semester in order to wrap up courses by Friday, Dec. 13, in which that day will also be run for additional instruction time.

On Friday afternoon (Nov. 29), the UNBC Faculty Association (UNBCFA) took down the picket lines in an attempt to save the semester for the students, while also planning to file a formal complaint with the BC Labour Relations Board about, what they call, bad-faith bargaining with the Employer.

The 2019 strike lasted for 23 days with hundreds of professors, support staff and students walking the picket lines at the Prince George, Quesnel and Terrace campuses, in addition to the Wood Innovation Design Centre downtown.

Both parties met several times in that time period before calling for a special mediator and the provincial government responded by sending Trevor Sones to the northern capital to help resolve the issue.

“Faculty will have the flexibility to work with Program Chairs and Deans to amend course syllabi and evaluation methods to the extent necessary to allow completion of courses and course requirements within 2019,” reads a UNBC update this evening.

Students are being advised to reach out to their professors if they have any questions relating to courses and requirements.
