As the province wound down from a night of political excitement, children rights came into focus on Sunday.

The provincial government proclaimed Nov. 20 as B.C. Child and Youth Day, an annual awareness date that celebrates the rights that children and youth are entitled to under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The convention centres on the four B's:

Be safe

Be healthy

Be yourself

Be heard

"This day is about celebrating children as active participants in their own lives and as active citizens who can and should meaningfully contribute to decision-making," said Minister of Children and Family Development Mary McNeil. "Year round, the ministry provides forums for youth to help shape our policies and includes youth in learning opportunities for staff."
