Rising Above is a documentary featuring several Canadians who have been bullied or are bullies and how they have risen above adversity. The College Heights secondary school leadership program presented the film Friday to 400 elementary school students in partnership with the local Cineplex.

There will be 400 elementary school students taking part in an event, hosted by the College Heights secondary school (CHSS) leadership program, today at the local movie theatre.

Rising Above will encourage the students who will soon be entering high school to speak the same language and share the same message that when life gets you down there are resources available to help them overcome challenges.

YLCC Media, the creator of the Rising Above film, is an organization dedicated to empowering today's youth by educating students through engaging and relevant visual media and films.

The film offers a perspective not only from the bullied but from the bully.

The film shows how certain Canadians were able to overcome their circumstances despite facing adversity.

There are interactive opportunities before, in the middle and at the end of the film, including a question and answer period.

"I'd love every child heading into high school to see this film, then maybe we'd have less children who harm themselves, less children who withdraw from life and more children that learn how to rise above," said Cindy Smith, a leadership teacher at CHSS in an email.

Rising Above talks about reality and how there are ups and downs, she added.

"But more importantly how to cope, how to seek help, how to give yourself a chance to rise above the feelings of dread and anxiety and feel good about being you," said Smith.

"If this helps one kid reach out to get help when they need it, then it will have been a great success."
