Employed stays above 50,000

The number of people working in Prince George remained above the 50,000 level for the second month in a row, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.

The number holding down jobs rose by 100 to 50,200 while the unemployment rate slipped to 4.7 per cent from 5.5 per cent the month before.

The number of unemployed or not seeking work rose by 300 to 17,900, however, while the total unemployed and looking for employment fell by 400 to 2,500. As a result, the participation rate fell by a half-percentage point to 74.6 per cent.

And the number of people of working age living in Prince George declined by 300 to 52,700.

In April 2013, the unemployment rate was lower at 4.6 per cent, but the number working was at 46,000 while the number of people not participating in the labour force was 22,500.

The figures do not say how many are working full-time and part-time and are based on a three-month rolling average.
