A public hearing on expense limits for municipal elections scheduled for this morning has been cancelled.
A committee of MLAs was going to be in the city to gather feedback on coming spending caps for local government candidates, including mayors, councillors and school board trustees.
The government has approved an expense-limit model for candidates and third-party advertisers using a flat rate amount in jurisdictions under 10,000 people and a per-capita formula for those larger than 10,000. The third party limit will be a percentage of a candidate's limit in the municipality where the third-party is advertising.
But the specifics of what those amounts will be have yet to be set.
The Prince George hearing, along with ones scheduled for Terrace, Fort St. John, Cranbrook and Penticton were canceled "due to very low registration," according to the committee's website.
The committee is supposed to make its final recommendations regarding the specific amounts by June 12. To make a written submission or complete an online survey, visit www.leg.bc.ca/cmt/leel.
