Two elderly motorists whose vehicle struck a moose Wednesday night were hospitalized with head injuries.

The two were travelling in a Honda Civic on the Old Cariboo Highway near Holmes Road when they hit the animal at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday. The impact broke the windshield and peeled the roof off the car, and the moose ended up lying dead in the ditch.

When police arrived at the scene, the occupants of the car, who are both in their 80s, were still inside. They were transported to UHNBC, where they remained overnight with serious injuries. Details of their condition were unavailable

A North District collision reconstructionist was sent to the scene to take measurements and obtain evidence.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass warned motorists to use extreme caution when travelling through rural or forested areas.

"The threat of animals being on the road poses a threat to northern residents all year round and drivers should be cautious of animals coming on to the road surface, especially during dusk and dawn hours," said Douglass.

n Police were called to a residence on Nation Crescent Wednesday at about 8:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a man being beaten by another man while being held by three others. RCMP located the man believed to be the victim, who refused medical help from ambulance paramedics and was uncooperative with police officers.

"There's very little we can do when people aren't co-operating," said Douglass. "It didn't appear he had any severe injuries."
