You can thank El Nino for the record-setting warmth the city enjoyed last month.

The average temperature for April was 8.4 C, eclipsing the old record for the month of 7.0 C set in 1980, according to Environment Canada. The normal average is 5.0 C.

"We're pinning it all on El Nino," Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa Coldwell said Friday.

Although the phenomenon of exceptionally warm Pacific water just off the equator peaked in December, Coldwell said this region is enjoying an "El Nino spring" because of a lag in the effect.

"We didn't see any effect of El Nino until February, so we've had a warm March and we've had a warm April and we started off the month of May pretty warm as well," Coldwell said.

"However, El Nino definitely is disintegrating and cooling so what we're expecting to see is that by the time we get to late spring, early summer, our El Nino is kaput and we've made a return to a typical and normal temperature regime for this upcoming summer."

So enjoy it while it lasts.
