The Duchess Park Senior Girls basketball team capped off their season on a winning note.

Despite losing their opening match at the 2019 BC ‘AA’ Provincials in Langley, the lady Condors won their next three games to finish first on the consolation side of the tournament, which placed them ninth overall out of 16 schools.

Their final record was 3-1 over the four-day event.

The first game against St. Thomas More of Burnaby didn’t go according to plan, losing by nearly double the score, 72-39; teams who lost their first contest were automatically sent to the consolation bracket.

Duchess Park immediately kicked it into high gear in proving they were the best team remaining, winning their final three games of the year.

  • 76-41 over Westsyde (Kamloops)
  • 62-48 over Whistler
  • 68-38 over Lambrick Park (Saanich)

The ladies were ranked seventh going into provincials, which took place from Wednesday (Feb. 27) to Saturday (March 2).

Meanwhile, local Junior Girls basketball teams didn't have the best of luck in their provincial championships over the weekend.

The 24-team tournament, also in Langley, saw College Heights finish as the top Prince George school in 18th place.

The Cougars were ranked 14th in B.C. going into the weekend after claiming the first spot from the North Central Zone.

Duchess Park was next in 22nd and Kelly Road in 23rd; the Roadrunners won their last game of the season over Hazelton Secondary by a score of 38-24.

The B.C. Senior Boys basketball championships begin this Wednesday (March 6) with three Prince George schools in contention.

Duchess Park is ranked fourth in the province going into the ‘3A’ bracket, D.P. Todd Secondary is the second best team in B.C. on the ‘2A’ side,  and the Cedars Christian Eagles are seventh-ranked in ‘1A.’

Northside Christian of Vanderhoof will also make an appearance as the ninth best team in the ‘1A’ division.
