A 14-year-old youth suffered serious injuries when she was struck early Tuesday morning while crossing Rainbow drive.
The vehicle's driver stopped initially but then fled the scene on foot prior to police arrival, Prince George RCMP said. A 31-year-old man who does not have a valid driver's licence was later arrested at an Irwin Street home.
Police were called to the scene at the corner of Rainbow and Liard Drives at 1 a.m. The scene was closed for a number of hours as investigators gathered evidence.
RCMP said it appears the man was heading west on Rainbow in a small SUV and struck the girl as she heading north across the street. The girl was transported to hospital.
"The investigation is in the beginning stages and will look into many possible causal factors," police said.
The suspect's name was not released.
