When two suspects lost control of their car and crashed into a snowbank, they also lost control of the suspicious contents of the vehicle. One man was arrested and charged.
A routine traffic check was how the incident began Friday at about 2:50 p.m. A patrolling Mountie attempted to do a common licence and insurance check in the area of Quince Street and Strathcona Avenue. However the vehicle sped away without stopping, triggering a large police involvement in locating the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt and its two male occupants.
"The officer lost sight of the vehicle for a brief moment but subsequently located the vehicle on Pearson Avenue where the vehicle had collided with a snow bank," said Prince George RCMP spokeswoman Const. Julie Champagne. "It is believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the snow bank due to the poor condition of his tires. Upon member arrival, both the driver and the passenger exited the vehicle. While the passenger remained on scene, the driver fled from police on foot."
Other members found the fleeing driver a short distance away. He was discovered to be Thomas John Price, 23, of New Brunswick.
Also discovered, allegedly inside the vehicle, were three stolen B.C. licence plates and a sawed off .22 calibre rifle.
The passenger was released without charge, but Price was held in custody and Crown counsel has approved charges against him of unauthorized possession of a firearm; careless use of a firearm; unauthorized possession in motor vehicle; flight from peace officer; obstruction; theft over $5,000; motor vehicle theft; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; ossession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
Price was also wanted on a warrant for failing to comply with a probation order dated back from 2008.
Price's next scheduled appearance in court is Monday.
