When children are able to go back to school, they'll need school supplies to be successful.

That's why the Salvation Army launched its annual backpack and school supplies drive Wednesday at Pine Centre Mall.

"The start of the school year should present every child with a fresh opportunity for a successful school year.," said Bill Glasgow, the Salvation Army's business co-ordinator. "Unfortunately, there are many families throughout Prince George who simply cannot afford the steep cost of purchasing a long list of required school supplies for their children."

Supplies that the Salvation Army's looking for include pens, pencils, calculators, rulers, glue sticks, binders, geometry sets, white-out and backpacks. Any of those donations can be dropped off in the yellow school bus in Pine Centre near the entrance to Target.

"We have supported this valuable program for many years," said Sonya Hunt, Pine Centre's general manager. "Our tenants and shoppers know the Salvation Army yellow bus will give local students a great start to the school year."

Donations of money are also wanted. Those willing can donate by credit card by phoning 250-564-4000 or visiting the Salvation Army's offices at 777 Ospika Blvd.

Those that need assistance can register at the Salvation Army's offices on Aug. 13 and 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., then from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
