Bullying, sex education and drug and gang awareness are some of the topics that will be discussed this weekend at a forum organized for parents by the District Parent Advisory Council.
"Our keynote speech will be delivered by Kerri Isham," said DPAC representative Sarah Holland. "[Isham is] a certified sexual Health educator passionate about supporting parents to talk openly with their kids about sexuality. Conversations that start early increase abuse resistance, and pave the way for future conversations as our children age. For many of us, sexual health education was something that was never talked about. Today, in our hyper-sexualized world, discussions around health, safety and decision-making are a must."
Other forum topics include anti-bullying awareness, finances and funding for Parent Advisory Councils, concerns around special-needs students, communicating with your teen, communicating with your school principal, drug and gang awareness, and social/emotional learning.
The event happens Saturday at the Coast Inn of the North between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Registration is at 8:30 and the first item on the agenda is Isham's speech.
Lunch and refreshments are provided.
Cost to attend is $30, but each school in the district has two free passes for appointed parent representatives. For more information please visit the DPAC website at www.sd57dpac.ca/
