The race is on.

There are now six candidates in line for School District 57 District Parent Advisory Council executive positions.

DPAC chair Don Sabo, who is letting his name stand for reelection for next school year, said DPAC has decided to change in the format of the election to allow candidates to choose the position they are running for in advance of the vote.

"Traditionally, people are elected to the DPAC executive and then the executive meets among itself and then appoints the positions, but there's been a change to that approach," said Sabo.

"There are a couple of individuals interested in the chair positions and a couple interested in vice-chair, so we're actually going to have an election. It's in the best interests of the kids when you have numbers of individuals looking for similar positions."

Other available positions include secretary, treasurer, director-at-large and district advocate. Sarah Holland, the current district advocate, plans to run against Sabo for the chair position. Current vice-chair Michelle Rolfes and Darlene Campbell (Duchess Park secondary school) have been nominated for the vice-chair position. Gillian Burnett (Nukko Lake elementary) is running for treasurer, while Steve Shannon (Kelly Road secondary) has been nominated for director-at-large.

Only people designated at DPAC representatives by parent advisory councils at individual schools are eligible for DPAC executive positions. Candidates must be the parent or guardian of a District 57 student (kindergarten to Grade 11) and must not be employees of the school district or education ministry.

The DPAC elections were discussed at Monday's public meeting, where the executive also reviewed its constitution, bylaws and policies.

The election will be held at DPAC's annual general meeting, starting at 7 p.m. on May 7 at the Van Bien training and development centre, 311 Wilson Cres. Nominations will be accepted from the floor right up until the election.
