Power was out for several hours early Saturday morning after a passing vehicle snagged a downed hydro line on the Hart Highway.

BC Hydro reported about 2,680 customers were without electricity as a result of the accident at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The southbound truck caught the line, which had fallen across the highway, causing a transformer to break and burst into flames in the parking lot of Arctic Manufacturing, 3312 Hart Highway.

"Initially, all the customers on that circuit were affected," said BC Hydro spokesman Bob Gammer. "The work was not completed because the crew had to go on to rest time [after a 16-hour shift] and had to take a mandatory eight-hour rest break."

Hydro crews restored power for all but three customers before that rest break. A crew returned to the scene on Saturday to replace the pole. Six employees of Arctic Manufacturing who arrived for work early Saturday morning were given the day off because the building was without power until late in the afternoon.
