It's that time of year when Canadians are gathering up their T4s for tax season.

But it's also that time of year when scammers try to impersonate Canada Revenue Agency — whether that be over the phone, in an email or through text — and ask for money.

Kamloops Mounties are reminding residents to not fall for the trap.

In a press release, Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the CRA will never do the following:

  • They will not request gift cards, prepaid credit cards, or bitcoin
  • Use aggressive language, intimidation or threaten you with arrest and police action
  • They will not request, by email, personal information of any kind from a taxpayer
  • They will not request information from a taxpayer pertaining to passport, health card or driver’s licence

"Always ask a trusted person and do research before sending anyone money or giving away any information," Shelkie says in the release. "Scammers use scare tactics and try to rush people into giving their money away before they get a chance to look into it."

If you believe you've been scammed, phone 1-800-495-8501, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. EST. You can also report a scam online
