A grant from the Prince George Community Association to the Prince George SPCA's pet food bank program will help make sure no pet needs to go hungry, according SPCA manager Sarah Jones.
Last year the program distributed more than two metric tonnes of dry cat and dog food, and 2,100 cans of dog food to pet owners in need. The program has already distributed 1,400 kg of dry food and 1,000 cans this year, Jones said in an email.
The one-time grant of $5,000 will help cover staffing costs and the purchase of mouse-proof storage for the food, Jones said.
"However, the food is donated through the generosity of the public and we utilize our amazing volunteers to help offset the staffing cost," she said. "There really is no price on the human-animal bond and we are so honoured to be in a position to make support the pet owners during such a difficult time."
The Prince George SPCA helped feed an average of 1,000 pets a week last year, Jones said.
While public donations kept the program, it ran into issues of shortages – especially of dry cat food. The donation will help the SPCA alleviate those shortages, Jones said.
In addition to COVID-safe pick up at the SPCA shelter, pet owners can access pet food through the Prince George Salvation Army, Prince George Native Friendship Society, Takla First Nations and Yekooche First Nations.
Pet owners in need can arrange a pick up by calling 250-562-5511, or through the listed partner agencies.
