In a statement released over twitter, Sportsnet has announced Don Cherry is no longer a part of Hockey Night in Canada.
"Following further discussions with Don Cherry after Saturday night's broadcast, it has been decided it is the right time for him to immediately step down," says Bart Yabsley, president of Sportsnet, in a statement.
Cherry came under fire after a segment on Coach's Corner as part of Saturday night's (Nov. 9) Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. He made remarks about immigrants not wearing poppies in advance of Remembrance Day. Shortly after it aired, calls for Cherry's resignation or firing followed on social media.
The longtime hockey commentator has been the face of Coach's Corner since 1986. Airing on CBC, it fell under the control of Rogers Media and Sportsnet in 2013 when the media company acquired Hockey Night in Canada, though it was still broadcast on CBC.
The 85-year-old former NHL coach and player has courted controversy before, most recently using the segment to share opinions on climate change and calling people who believe in climate change "cuckaloos."
