'Dog on a Hog' statue stolen

It might seem like just a cool statue with a bit of attitude but this "Dog on a Hog" means much more than that to one local widow.

It might seem like just a cool statue with a bit of attitude but this "Dog on a Hog" means much more than that to one local widow.

For 15 years, the metal statue depicting a beagle with ears blowing in the breeze riding a motorcycle has been sitting on the flat part of Susan Andrist's roof at the front of her house.

It was stolen a few days ago.

Susan bought the statue for her husband, Audie, in 2003, the year they got married and bought their house on Ewert Street.

The dog has sat on his hog there ever since.

Susan lost Audie to cancer in 2010 and she looked at the statue every time she left the house.

"I am just heartbroken that someone stole it," Susan said.

"All I want is for whoever took it to bring it back, no questions asked."

She reported the theft to the police and the constable who took the call said he'd do everything he could but to also be on the lookout for the metal statue on popular online selling sites and to report it to police if anyone comes across it that way, or sees it at a garage sale.

Susan has muscular dystrophy and before her health deteriorated, she was the longtime president of the northern chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. She's got a form of muscular dystrophy that sees her body degenerate over time and for now uses leg braces and a walker to get around and a scooter for longer distances.

Susan and Audie were dedicated volunteers who founded the Muscle Run, a summer fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy in partnership with the Harley Owners Group (HOG) of Prince George. The popular event was held for years and saw more than 100 motorcyclists travel from Williams Lake to Smithers every summer.

HOG members and local firefighters, who hold the boot drive each year to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy, knew the house with the dog on the hog on Ewert Street was Susan and Audie's house.

"I miss my dog on the hog," Susan said. "I always thought of Audie whenever I looked at it. It made me feel like he was watching over me."
