District approves landfill gas capture expansion

The regional district board of directors unanimously approved a $379,000 expansion to the methane gas capture system at the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill. The project will be funded the from the district's Community Works Fund - a $1.

The regional district board of directors unanimously approved a $379,000 expansion to the methane gas capture system at the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill.

The project will be funded the from the district's Community Works Fund - a $1.7 million reserve funded by the federal gas tax rebates.

Under the project, eight additional gas wells would be installed to capture methane gas and burn it. Currently 16 gas wells are installed in the landfill to capture and burn the gas from decaying material.

The project is projected to capture an additional 340 cubic metres of methane per hour. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas.
