UNBC and the Northern Branch of the B.C. Association of Social Workers have teamed together to celebrate the legacy of Prince George social worker and activist Bridget Moran.

The Bridget Moran Bursary Dinner will be held March 17 and will help raise funds to establish an endowed UNBC Bridget Moran Bursary in social work.

"Bridget Moran was an activist and an author who helped to improve the lives of many people in northern B.C.," said UNBC social work professor Glen Schmidt.

"She was especially passionate about children, social justice, poverty and indigenous issues."

The bursary will honour Moran's dedication and life's work by supporting current students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue a career in social work.

"The Bridget Moran Bursary will continue that legacy by helping to support students striving to obtain a professional social work degree," Schmidt said.

"UNBC is a young university so there are not many bursaries and scholarships available as in older universities with larger alumni."

Before she died in 1999, Moran was a strong advocate for social and political causes.

Moran worked for the province of B.C., the Prince George Regional Hospital, (now the University Hospital of Northern B.C.) the University of Victoria and the Prince George School District.

Moran also sat on the board of the Legal Services Society of B.C. and was on the board of governors of the College of New Caledonia.

She received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from UNBC in 1995 and an honorary degree from the University of Victoria.

Moran was also bestowed as an honorary member of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women.

In 2004, a statue of Moran, created by Nathan Scott, was unveiled at the Intersect Youth & Family Services Society Building in downtown Prince George.

Tickets for the dinner are available today and Friday.
