Diggers strike natural gas pipe

Police cordoned off a stretch of residential street early Friday afternoon and Fortis sent in a crew to deal with a natural gas pipe that had been struck when heavy equipment was operating in the area.

Fortis spokesperson Tracy Tang said a third party contractor knocked the pipe out of the ground and the crew needed about two hours to repair the break, which was located at the north end of Lisgar Crescent near the intersection of Massey and Westwood Drives.

"There was no one that had to be evacuated because there was no gas venting," Tang said.

She urged those who intend to do some digging to call BC1Call at 1-800-474-6886 first to find out if there are any pipes in the area where the work is to be carried out.
