There's a dementia support group in Prince George looking for volunteers.
It's not for the dementia patient, it's for their caregivers.
"This is their lifeline," said Leanne Jones, Alzheimer Society of B.C. support and education coordinator for Prince George. "They can meet with people with similar issues who are in a unique position to offer support to others on the same journey. The group is a place where they can talk openly, share information and give each other mutual support."
It's estimated one in 11 residents of B.C. over 65 live with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. In 25 years that number is expected to double.
"Volunteers are absolutely invaluable to our team," said Jones. "It's exceptionally rewarding work, to know that you are making a meaningful difference in someone's life. Our volunteers tell us they get far more in return than they give."
If interested in being a group facilitator there are a few requirements, including excellent listening and empathetic skills, knowledge of dementia or a willingness to learn, facilitation skills or willingness to learn, formal or informal caregiving experience.
Training is provided and a one-year commitment is required.
