Wildlife photo enthusiasts have until this Friday to enter their images in this year's version of the B.C. Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wildlife photo contest.
Entries are being accepted for two categories - wild settings and backyard habitats - and prizes are awarded to the top three finishers.
The entry fee is $5 per entry and there is no maximum on the number of entries. Net contest proceeds go to the BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre to care for local injured and orphaned wildlife.
All photos of wildlife entered must be taken within B.C. and submitted digitally in a .jpg file and be at least 1 MB in size. However, original files of camera-made digital photos must be 4 MB or larger and must be available by request.
“Wildlife” includes free-living birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and insects, but not exotic, feral or domestic animals, or wildlife in zoos or rehabilitation facilities. And the photos must not contain people.
Prince George's Elle Ambrosi, whose photo of a hare earned her an honourable mention in last year's contest, has a head start. So far, she's entered 14 photos, including one of two fox kits she encountered near River Road in May.
Ambrosi's entries, and all the others, can be found by spca.bc.ca/wildlife-in-focus. Type Ambrosi into the search field to find her submissions.
Entries will be judged on the basis of originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit.
There is also a peoples choice award based on the votes entries receive online. That can also be done by going to spca.bc.ca/wildlife-in-focus. The deadline for voting is also this Friday at midnight.
