Prince George residents will have a chance to commemorate the end of the country's military mission in Afghanistan.
Branch 43 of the Royal Canadian Legion is participating in the National Day of Honour Friday morning.
In March, the federal government declared May 9 as the day to commemorate the contributions of the 40,000 members of the Canadian Armed Forces, their families and the allies who participated in the 12-year Afghanistan campaign.
The Prince George Legion event will begin at 10 a.m. at the 1116 Sixth Ave location before setting off with a march to the Cenotaph. Two minutes of silence will be observed at 10:30, followed by a balloon release and wreath laying. The legion will be open afterwards to members, families and children.
Among the 158 military personnel who lost their lives in Afghanistan was Prince George resident Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick, who was killed in action in March 2010 at the age of 21.
