A girl's quest to quench her mother's eviction notice with the proceeds from a lemonade stand didn't quite meet her ambitious goal, but getting halfway there was more than good enough.
Brenda Josephson said her daughter Megan Semenuk, 14, brought in about $1,500 with her small table set up last week at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Ogilvie Street. Megan had been striving for $3,000.
Megan was trying to contribute to her mom's rent after Josephson received a 10-day eviction notice on Aug. 8.
Josephson said she had fallen behind due to a number of factors. After a new job fell through, Josephson said she was unable to return to her old one because her position had already been filled. Add on top of that a roommate who just moved out, and the $400 in unemployment insurance Josephson collects every two weeks only goes so far when there's food to buy and other bills to pay.
Josephson said she was able to make another deposit towards her deficit on Monday and is no longer in danger of being evicted.
"I'm really proud of her for doing what she has done when she doesn't have to do it," Josephson said of her daughter, "but she still felt like she had to."
The donations came pouring in with every cup Megan served. For example, Josephson said there was group of flooring company employees who each paid $20 for a drink and a couple of people who dropped off rolls of toonies.
Josephson said she wanted to extend "a big thanks from our family for (the community's) support in a time of need."
