A man who jumped off the Simon Fraser Bridge into the Fraser River died in hospital early Thursday morning, despite a daring attempt by an RCMP officer to save his life.

Just before 1 a.m. the Prince George RCMP received a call from a driver who witnessed a man jump off the bridge, according to information released by the RCMP.

Multiple officers converged on the scene and along the Fraser River to look for the man.

Just after 2 a.m., Cst. Stu Love saw the man in the river and heard him yelling near the Creekside subdivision, approximately five kilometres downstream from the bridge.

Love dived into the river and swam approximately 25 metres through frigid water out to the man, and pulled him back to shore.

The man was taken to the University Hospital of Northern B.C., where he was treated for life-threatening injuries including hypothermia. At approximately 4 a.m., the man succumbed to his injuries and died.

Police were not able to identify the man as of Thursday morning. The investigation into the death is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300.

Love is resting and recovering at home.
