Bicycle riders are getting together downtown tonight at the Civic Centre to participate in Critical Mass. The event is held on the last Friday of every month in more than 300 cities around the world.

"It's happened sporadically through the biking season in Prince George. This month we are hoping to get a good turn-out by promoting the Mary Poppins Effect, which suggests that less accidents occur when cyclists wear blonde wigs [rather] than helmets, because motorists tend to pay more respect to cyclists that are dressed up nicely or look like young women," said Jillian Merrick, president of the Prince George Cycling Club.

"It's to promote respect for cyclists and their right to use the road," said Merrick.

Prince George RCMP aren't anticipating any problems as a result of the event.

A ticket for not wearing a helmet while cycling is $29.
