Cullen helps NDP win opposition status with Skeena-Bulkley valley victory

NDP candidate Nathan Cullen swept to another victory in Skeena-Bulkley Valley, helping his party nationally to their biggest win ever.

NDP candidate Nathan Cullen swept to another victory in Skeena-Bulkley Valley, helping his party nationally to their biggest win ever.

He helped his party capture a record 103 seats, as NDP leader Jack Layton now takes over as official opposition leader.

Cullen, with a four consecutive wins since 2004, won by a wide margin, capturing 60 per cent of the vote, to second-place finisher Liberal Clay Harmon with 31 per cent.

The vast riding extends from Haida Gwaii on the west coast to Fort St. James, just west of Prince George.

Cullen and runner-up Conservative candidate Clay Harmon had tussled over the economy, with Harmon saying the riding lost out on government spending when Cullen voted against two budgets.

However, Cullen said he stood by his record, which has included support for the $404-million Northwest Transmission Line, which if it goes ahead, will open up a vast area to mining and run-of-the-river power projects.

Cullen has also been a major opponent of Enbridge's $5.5-billion Northern Gateway oil pipeline, with opposition to the project stronger in northwestern B.C. than in north-central B.C.

The Liberal and Green candidates finished well back with less than four per cent of the vote.
