Crisis line volunteers are needed in Prince George. The deadline to apply for the next round of beginners' training is Monday.
"We are in need of new volunteers, it is a rewarding thing to do, and it helps people all over the north," said Verna MacLeod, executive director for the Crisis Centre for Northern B.C.
The centre takes calls from Prince George and all over the northern region. There is a main outreach line and one especially for youth, and the organization is linked into a province-wide network of crisis and referral services.
Anyone interested in joining the team of trained listeners who answer calls is asked to look up the application for on the group's website (www.northernbccrisissuicide.ca/training) or visit their office on the fifth floor of the Native Friendship Centre (1600 Third Avenue, across from Books and Company).
The training runs the evening of Friday, plus daytime Saturday and Sunday during the first and second weekends of March.
Once finished the two weekends of training, volunteers are asked to book themselves for a minimum of one four-hour shift per week, for one year. You can do more.
"We have one volunteer who has more than 3,000 hours of time in," said MacLeod. "Others only do the minimum and that is a big help."
