Prince George saw a significant drop in crime severity in 2024, according to newly released numbers from Statistics Canada,

The city’s overall Crime Severity Index (CSI) fell to 199.83 in 2024 — down 13.87 per cent from the previous year — reversing a 10.71 per cent increase in 2023. This marks the lowest CSI level since 2020, when it stood at 231.19.

The decline was driven largely by a sharp drop in non-violent crime, Stats Can reports, with non-violent CSI decreasing by 17.97 per cent, from 225.70 in 2023 to 185.15 in 2024.

Violent crime also saw a modest improvement — the violent CSI fell by 4.69 per cent to 240.80, after a significant spike in 2023.

Clearance rates, which are measured as an indicator of police effectiveness, also improved.

The weighted clearance rate rose to 29.11 per cent — up 26.35 per cent from the previous year. Researchers assign "weight" to types of crimes, with more weight for more severe offences. The more serious the crime, the more weight it carries in the final tally.

Non-violent crime clearance saw the most notable jump, rising from 18.46 per cent to 26.39 per cent, an increase of nearly 43 per cent.

Violent crime clearance also improved slightly, rising to 34.33 per cent.
