Cranbrook Hill Road is closed today as city crews repair erosion damage to the shoulders and ditches.

City transportation manager Mick Jones said heavy rainfall in the past month was responsible for the damage.

"It didn't undermine it [the road], but some of the shoulder and ditch was eroded. But the new pavement wasn't affected," Jones said. "We have a backhoe up there and we're installing some riprap that'll be a little bit better at withstanding erosion."

The steep, winding road is used heavily by residents of the Cranbrook Hill area, cyclists and users of the Forests for the World park.

A section of the road was repaved this summer as part of the city's $3.5 million road rehabilitation program.

The steep elevation of the road makes it particularly vulnerable to erosion, Jones said. However, the heavy rain this year created erosion problems in several areas of the city.

"It's not the only area where we had that happen," Jones said. "It's not something we plan for. It just happens if we get a significant rain fall, either a lot in one day or all at once."

Jones did not have a cost estimate for the erosion repair work on Cranbrook Hill Road, but, "it's not a huge dollar amount."
